About the Ka Band project

This ESA funded project Ka-band Radio characterisation for SatCom services in arctic and high latitude regions performs a long-term study of Ka-band propagation effects in arctic and high latitude regions. It is believed that the outcome of this study can be used to further refine and enhance the relevant ITU-R radio wave propagation models for geostationary orbiting satellites serving high latitude low elevation angle locations on land, coastal areas, and at sea.

Consortium

The consortium bidding for this project on includes the following companies:

  • Telenor Satellite Broadcasting (TSBc) a satellite operator and service provider.
  • Norwegien Defense Research Establshemnet (FFI) a research organisation.
  • Norwegian Defence Logistic Organisation (NDLO) as satellite operator and service provider.
  • University graduate center Kjeller (UNIK) an academic institute.
  • SINTEF a research organisation.

Telenor Satellite Broadcasting (TSBc)

TSBc provides, secure, flexible and reliable distribution of direct-to-home (DTH) satellite television (including high definition channels) and audio via our satellite fleet based at 1°West, creating tailored solutions to address customers’ specific needs. FFI is the prime institution responsible for defence-related research in Norway. The Establishment is the chief adviser on defence-related science and technology to the Ministry of Defence and the Norwegian Armed Forces’ military organization. FFI addresses these challenges through a broad spectrum of research topics ranging from the assistance of operational units to the support of national security policy via defence planning and technology studies.

The Norwegian Defence Logistics Organisation (NDLO)

NDLO is responsible for support of all operational activity in the Norwegian Armed Forces. This support covers among other things management of The Norwegian Communication and Information Services Division, procurements and investment, supply, maintenance and storage of materiel. NDLO is organised in seven divisions: Land capabilities, Naval capabilities, Air capabilities, Joint service capabilities, CIS capabilities, Maintenance and Supply.

University Graduate Center Kjeller (UNIK)

UNIK and the University College of Gjøvik (HiG) represent academic partners in this project. UNIK is a non-profit educational and research foundation owned by the University of Oslo (UiO), Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) and the three major research institutes: the Norwegian Defense Research Establishment (FFI), Institute for Energy Technology (IFE) and Telenor R&D. UNIK is a graduate educational institution for master and doctoral students, primarily from UiO and NTNU. The main focus of UNIK is on applied science.

SINTEF

The SINTEF Group is the fourth largest Contract Research Organization (CRO) in Europe, and the largest independent research organisation in Scandinavia. SINTEF will be a project partner using personnel from two of its institutes to perform the work. SINTEF ICT will contribute with expertise on signal propagation and signal processing, while MARINTEK will contribute with its experience and expertise in the field of applied maritime communications. SINTEF ICT will be the coordinator of SINTEF's activities under this proposal.
