Description Multihop communication is a powerful and cost-effective solution to enable the fast deployment of WSNs, covering large areas or increasing the density of sensing points. It eases the WSN operative removing the need of an infrastructure to support it. But industrial and transportation environments feature highly harsh conditions for these systems, requiring additional efforts to ensure a safety-compliant operation and a basic QoS fulfillment. Communication protocols enabling this ad hoc networking are more complex and require an extended hazards analysis, demanding more robustness, stand-alone unattended operation, and extra coordination to efficiently manage the spectrum scheduling, to recover from errors, to manage the QoS and to ensure the message delivery.
Main output This building block will be a software protocol stack for reliable wireless multi-hop communications. This stack will be composed of different standards, integrated and modified to get the expected result in the destination scenarios and use cases, which will produce a stack with a guaranteed QoS for a set of industrial scenarios, following a safety- compliant development process. This stack will be integrable in technically compatible WSN HW platforms. It will focus on reliable communications in harsh environments, basic guarantee of latency and reliability through deterministic medium access, dynamic scheduling of nodes based on their communication needs, IP integration in higher architecture levels, and safety operative for the specific use cases. The prototype will be set in a real WSN for testing and demonstrating in a full-scale realistic use case.
BB category SW component
Baseline Standard IEEE802.15.4e comes up to deal with the wireless issues in industrial scenarios for WPAN. It supports a highly efficient modulation with channel hopping to avoid interferences, and features a promising technology for MAC: TSCH. Together, they offer a baseline definition to build up different solutions, leaving aspects as the scheduling algorithm to the developers. During last 3 years the scientific community has evaluated these technologies and has detected many issues which still render these technologies as unreliable (see RFC7554), specially in mesh topologies. This building block will be based on aforemetioned technologies with some new developments to get:
  • Safety (integrity control, local control loop, IEC 61508 and EN 50121 for SW/HW design and development process)
  • Reliability (mesh topology + deterministic communications, channel hopping + blacklisting, smart error management)
  • Self-management (pro-active routing resolution, dynamic MAC auto-scheduling for deterministic communications)
Current TRL TRL4. Basic research tasks come from DEWI project. In this Building Block, different SW components designed in DEWI, with new standards and components will be integrated and adapted to the new functionality.
Target TRL TRL6. A prototype protocol stack will be implemented and demonstrated with a real WSN in the full-scale use cases.
