Headline Update MediaWiki and SemanticMediaWiki to "stable version"
Status New
Issue ID 014
Issue Type Enhancement
Priority Low
Description We currently (Jan2017) have MediaWiki 1.23 and Semantic MediaWiki 2.0. I expect that some of the problems come from outdated versions, and thus suggest to update to "stable versions" .

Response MW 1.23 is an LTS version, so is still supported. I can patch it up to 1.23.15 to ensure it's secure.

I can also upgrade SMW to 2.2.2. This is a nice stable version.

SMW 3+ requires MW 1.26+. Two issues here:

  1. MW 1.26 onwards uses a new skinning engine, so some skin rework will be required. Some extensions also no longer work as they changed the way extensions are loaded. I can evaluate what extensions are at risk.
  2. SMW 3 is pretty new and seems a bit unstable at present. You also have to upgrade all dependent modules - Maps, SRF, PageForms etc.

First thing will be to patch up to MW 1.23.15 and SMW 2.2.2. These versions will keep you going for a good while and are very stable.

I suggest we then build a new separate instance using newer MW and SMW as see if anything breaks. Are you planning to upgrade the server to Ubuntu 16.04 at some point?

Response Agreed with your suggestion of upgrading to MW1.23.15 as an LTS version, same for SMW 2.2.2

Yes, at one point in time I plan to upgrade to Ubuntu 16.04. Have done that already for my other sever quito.unik.no. The upgrade to php7 created lot's of trouble, e.g. that the mediawiki extensions stopped working (e.g. Semantic Forms, skins). Thus, please recommend how _and_ when to make the move to Ubuntu 16.04 and xxx Mediawiki and xxx Semantic Mediawiki. As I said, the update of quito.unik.no to 16.04 LTS was cumbersome and left some "open issues". - As usual, I follow your suggestion :-)
