Movation offers a PhD position of 3 years duration in the area of "Modelling secure operations for Unmanned Aerial Vehicles" (UAV)

-obsolete-

Autonomous operations are introduced in our society to reduce costs and risk, and to open for optimised operations and novel operational concepts. Examples of such operations are unmanned vehicles on land, water, subsea and in the are. Establishing autonomous production processes is an ongoing activity for the oil and gas industry in the North.

Examples of future operations (Source:Frost & Sullivan, 2008)

Such an autonomous operation has the potential of reducing risk, but has strict security requirements, i.e. ensuring reliable operations. The envisaged PhD position will focus on a novel concept of "Modelling secure operations of a UAV". In an ongoing activity we have demonstrated that flight operations can be performed using information from a knowledge base rather than implementing algorithms in the embedded system onboard of the aircraft. Though the principle is understood, the challenges addressed through this PhD are in the description of the system, the creation of the knowledge base and the verification of the flight operations.

As Movation has the focus on start-ups, we will seek for applicability in other domains in need for secure solutions like oil & gas, eHealth or intelligent transport.

Envisaged tasks

IQ Engine principle

Theoretical:

  • Establish semantic descriptions for system and operational aspects of autonomous operations (example: UAV)
  • Establish mechanisms for applying the semantic descriptions to a model of flight operations of a UAV

Implementation:

  • Establish an IQ_Engine knowledge base from operation description and physical modelling
  • Verify the knowledge database against the physical models

Demo

  • fly a UAV based on the knowledge database

General information

The research is performed in the context of the nSHIELD European project, which is financed in part by the Norwegian Research Council. You will work together in a team with national project participants from Alfatroll and Movation, and international project participants, as well as becoming part of the UiO/UNIK student environment.

The work will be conducted both at Movation (Oslo) and at UNIK (Kjeller) in Norway. As a Movation employee you will be part of the exciting arena for innovation, and as a PhD researcher at UNIK you will have the opportunity to work in an exciting internal environment with close contact to Research Institutes and Industry. UNIK has just the right size to be flexible enough to support individual wishes, has own parking spaces and reasonable bus connections to Oslo and Lillestrøm. An own fitness area with sauna allows for a work-out whenever you feel like. For more information see UNIK.no

Application documents

The PhD will be performed as part of an Industrial PhD Scheme, requiring the admission to the PhD program of the University of Oslo. Salary is after the rules from the state, based on your experience.

The application (norwegian or english) should contain

  1. CV including names and contact information of two references
  2. List of publications (if applicable)
  3. Transcript of records for both the MSc and the BSc
  4. Summary and status of our master thesis
  5. A statement from you indicating your ideas and interests in this topic

Application submission

Admission criteria for UiO/UNIK

The purpose of the Ph.D. fellowship is research training leading to the successful completion of a PhD degree. The fellowship requires admission to the research training programme at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences. Firstly, the applicants must have obtained undergraduate (Cand.mag., i.e. B.Sc. level) with a level corresponding at least "C" and postgraduate (cand.scient. or Siv.ing., i.e. M.Sc. level) qualifications with a level corresponding at least "A". This represents approximately five years of full time studies after completion of European Upper Secondary School/International Baccalaureate.
