Notes
GUIFI Africa
- Alfred has worked with Ramon Roca (GUIFI network) to take the community network idea to Africa
- The major bottleneck is the cost of the backbone, typically being around 500 USD for a 5 Mbps/month. Stephen Fosu, having built Step Network (@SNETGH)
- GUIFI Africa received the license in Oct2021, and now pursues the activities in connecting schools in rural areas
Basic Internet
- Solution with wireless information spots ("InfoSpots") for the free access to information
- provides a local Wifi spot, that can be extended to create local networks, see http://Solutions.BasicInternet.no
- Using the mobile network even in places where there is practically no mobile broadband coverage
- Freemium Access, with free access to information and premium access to broadband service
Contacts
Secondary Energy for Africa (SESA project) - with replication of electricity concepts in Ghana
- partner in Ghana Akenten Appiah-Menka University of Skills Training and Entrepreneurial Development (AAMUSTED), with Prof. Isaac Boateng (coordinator) Albert Awopone (Electrical Engineer), Kingsley Agyapong (Marketing/capacity building expert)
- planning to connect 4 schools in the surrounding of Accra
Basic Internet communities in 12 countries in Africa
From InfoSpots to Community Networks & Commercial Mobile Broadband
Step 1: At least one InfoSpot per village
- create at least one InfoSpot in every village - OPEX target of less than 20 USD/month
- connect all schools & primary health centres
- provide free access to information through these InfoSpots
- using a 10/20 GByte 3G/4G/5G mobile package as the basis for access to information
Step 2: limited connectivity through new business models
- turn from packages to a basic link of e.g. 5 Mbps through the mobile network.
- Example: Safaricom agreed on a 5 Mbps link provision using the 3G/4G SIM card to connect schools. Costs 58 USD/month for a 5 Mbps link (as part of the SchoolConnectivity_KE_2021 project)
Step 3: Scale-up to community networks and commercial mobile networks
- commercial or community operation
