Mobile networks have undoubtedly changed our way of living, our mindset, and the industrial environment. This session will introduce (i) the mobile developments from the first generation (1G) to 5G, (ii) provide an outview on how IoT and autonomous systems will change the ecosystems, and (iii) discuss open topics leading to 6G mobile communications.
(i) The evolution of mobile systems wasn’t only a technical challenge, but rather addressed societal aspects, e.g. moving from analogue voice to mobile Internet and “mobile first” in the development of applications.
(ii) 5G mobile networks address, besides the increase in throughput, addressed the two new domains massive IoT (mIoT) and industrial process automation. The session will address how these extensions will be the driver for automation and the digital transformation
(iii) Given the massive productivity gain through 5G, as well as the costs of deployment, we see the digital divide will rather be advanced than dismantled. As an example, OECD reported in Mar2020 that “roughly 327 million fewer women than men have a smartphone and can access mobile internet. Women are on average 26 percent less likely than men to have a smartphone”.
