Purpose and Notes

We discussed around the Digital Health Platforms, and how to create a sustainable model. As a conclusion, Uwe will invite colleagues from the three areas

  • the Africa cloud (Atingi) for hosting of content, see National Knowledge Portal
  • The hardware for the edge information locally, e.g. a Raspberry Pi (see BasicInternet:Solutions)
  • Gamification for health content, as used a.o. in the Cystocercosis Tapeworm app

From the Basic Internet Foundation, we focus on a sustainable solution for providing access to digital information to everyone. Our work encompasses the following three areas:

  • Digital Inclusion and access, especially on how to bring information spots to rural areas
  • Internet Lite standard for the free access to information for all, and local information spots
  • A local information spot, being a Edge Cloud with digital health and education content.

As an example of school connectivity, we addressed sustainability during the meeting between community members and governmental representatives in Feb2020 in Dar es Salaam (TZ) a maximum of 20 USD/month in operational costs (OPEX).

  • Our solution is based on a mobile network antenna, a local network control centre and a village/school platform (typically a Raspberry Pi) providing access to Internet Lite and to broadband content locally.

Regarding digital health information, we focus on Digital Health Promotion (DHP), with the vision that every health facility will have an information spot providing free access to information.

Sustainability in Digital solutions is a key issue. We have seen man projects addressing digital health promotion, but sustainability has not been ensured. Our suggestion is to address sustainability through two aspects

  • The National Knowledge Portal for each country, addressing digitisation and digital skills, as well as holding information on education, health, agriculture and innovation
  • A local representation of the National Knowledge Portal, where lightweight content (text & pictures) are provided through the Internet, and where heavy content such as videos and animations are stored locally.

This National Knowledge Portal would be the en entry point for qualified content, addressing a.o. Infodemics about the Covid-19 outbreak, as well as Digital Public Goods (DPGs). Examples of DPGs are data like [1]health inventory as [[2]]and education as of Khan Academy. Zimbabwe has adopted the National Knowledge Platform with a platform provided by Kortextand courses by Digital Skills Foundation.
