Child protection: We care.

We at Basic Internet Foundation (BIF) know that talking about child protection isn’t joy. Although it’s 100% indispensable, we absolutely take it extremely seriously.

Helping children improve their lives and come out of the cycle of poverty isn’t just by providing education and health care. It’s about keeping children safe and working toward the total well-being of every single child.

BIF is operating off of the following Child Protection’s five basic Guiding Principles:

  1. Absolute no-tolerance for child abuse.
  2. Conserving children’s rights and interests.
  3. Positioning the child as the first priority when handling all suspected or identified cases of child abuse.
  4. Educating and empowering children on their rights, personal safety and cautions/steps that can be taken, if they are in a problem.
  5. Consolidating child protection into all levels of our organizational strategy, work practices and frameworks.

Our child protection policy

The Basic Internet Foundation Child Protection Policy is formed of several components, all having the goal of “ keeping children safe”. It comprises organization-specific child protection protocols, reporting incidents’ guidelines, preventing abuse steps, and training for BIF staff and partners.

Child protection protocols

All the internal and external processes are required to have their specific child protection protocols based on BIF’s overarching Guiding Principles and Child Protection Policies. Those protocols encompass child abuse’s local laws, its required procedures, local authorities list to whom child abuse cases are reported, as well as partner organizations list to reach which can provide the victims with an appropriate support services.

Incidents reporting

In all the child-abuse incidents reported, BIF demands that the child’s best interest is the first priority. Moreover, all incidents must be handled promptly, and they must be addressed in an extremely confidential manner that doesn’t harm the person reporting the abuse or the victim.

Preventing abuse

Undoubtedly, hindering child abuse completely is the ultimate goal for any child-aid organisation. BIF believes that we should do everything in our power to help ensure children’s safety and reduce abuse cases as much as possible. The key to our strategy is awareness/ education:

  1. Educating children and staff and on how to prevent and identify child abuse.
  2. Involving children in programs that educate them on their rights, steps they must take if they’re in a problem, and techniques of personal-safety.
  3. Supporting and encouraging staff, children and community members to report abuse cases.
  4. Combining child protection information into other InfoSpots information packages. Thus, we reemphasise the importance of protecting children by reaching a broader audience.
  5. Giving all children and teens the opportunity to participate in programs and get information regardless of sexual orientation, gender, disability, ethnicity or religion.

BIF staff and volunteers/partners training

All staff and volunteers have mandatory training on our Child Protection Policy and Protocols. As well all new employees and volunteers are also trained to follow the protocols and policy.

BIF communications

As you read through our website, you probably have noticed some of the measures we are taking to protect children. Those include:

  1. Telling the exact story (truth). So, never use sensationalised or manipulated images and/or text, and definitely not employing degrading or discriminatory language.
  2. Never use inappropriately clothed children's images.
  3. Not overtly disclosing children’s information such as last name or address which could be used to identify the children within a country.
  4. Never publishing health information, except if the family has given a written consent.
  5. In addition, children and youth featured in our materials must consent (or their parents / guardians) to use their images or stories in our different channels prior to publication.
