Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) for DESSI

Questions & Answers (Q&A) to the Distributed Energy Systems Security Infrastructure (DESSI) platform, collecting data from 80-100 households. The Department of Technology Systems (ITS) received infrastructure fonds from UiO by end of 2022 to establish a) physical infrastructure, b) a digital twin and c) establish a scientific database "ENTRANS" for the collection of energy data from 80-100 households. The goal is to increase the educational and academic knowledge of power consumption, and analyse how easy the transition to smart energy homes will be. The work is a collaborative attempt from UiO, OsloMet and secondary schools (VGS) in electronics and data.

Collection of Data

Q: Which data will be collected from my home Smart Meter?

  • We use the HAN port at the Smart Meter to read voltage, current, frequency and phase every 10 s. These data are stored in a local microcomputer (Raspberry Pi) and transmitted once a day (tbc) to the UiO cloud server.
  • Based on the data we can calculate the power consumption in the home/house, as well as perform machine learning to identify energy characteristics (see: Analysis).

Q: What data are stored from the fuses in my home?

  • Besides the reading from the HAN port of your smart meter, some households will have the energy reading (voltage, current, and phase every 10 s) on a fuse level. This will allow a better understanding of the the potential of (i) the amount of energy used by appliances and (ii) the capability of shifting energy peaks.


Storage of energy data

Q: Where are the energy data stored? We collect your electricity data on a local Raspberry Pi, and send the data to the UiO infrastructure.  Electricity data are de-identified with a three character post code, e.g. 108x (see question on "how do you anynomise and store?" and stored on an UiO server using Microsoft Azure, located in Europe and following European laws.

Q: How do you de-identify and store?

  • We store the rough local using the first three characters of the post code in Norway, e.g. 108x for all postcodes starting from 1081-1089 in Oslo east, or 202x for 2020 Skedsmokorset, Gjerdrum, Skjetten and 2029 Rælingen (the coarser postcode 20xx is too big, as it covers the area Strømmen to Minnesund with different climate conditions)
  • In order to be able to contact the household, the administrativ leader will have a confidential and private database with household adresses, owners and contact information to be informed about failures or software updates.
  • Note: https://www.erikbolstad.no/postnummer-koordinatar/?postnummer=1071 shows the geographic area of the postcode, and https://www.bring.no/tjenester/adressetjenester/postnummer for all postcodes used in Norway
  • Note 2: Suggest to perform a privacy analysis to compare the number of households for a privacy analysis

Analysis of Data

Q: What are you using the energy data for?

  • The Energy data are collected to enable a) education at secondary schools and b) scientific research on the energy data in form of Master- and PhD-topics.

Q: How can I use my data?

  • Your energy consumption is stored on the local Raspberry Pi in your home. The Department of Technology (ITS) at UiO will enable open available software, e.g. HomeAssistand App to visualise the data from your home, as well as invite for usage seminars once a year.

Q: Does UiO share my energy data?

  • Your data are stored in a de-identifiable way (see section on storage) and shared with the research community. Thus registered users can have access to the data and use them for their own models.

Legal framework

Q: What kind of consent are you based on?

A: The legal framework for data collection is based on consent from the household owners. See Letter of Consent for participating in DESSI.

Q: Can I resign from DESSI? What happens with my data once I resign?

A: Yes, you can resign at any time. We may ask you to return the infrastructure, then delete the data of your household from our server. However, if the data were used as basis for a scientific paper, these papers will remain in the public.

A: By applying through a form, then you get a user-id and the login

Q: What kind of licensing?

A: Publications and reports shall have a pointer to the data saying "The data in this report were provided by the Department of Technology Systems (ITS) at the University of Oslo (UiO) as part of the ENTRANS energy data framework agreement"
