6 - Information Spots (course)

The course «Connect The Future» was on establishing wireless information spots (InfoSpots) for schools in Africa. The presentation shows the challenges of access to information in developing economies, with a specific focus on Africa South of Sahara (SSA). Given the high costs of access, and the restricted capability to pay for access, there is little Return on Investment (RoI) for Internet access in rural Africa.

Thus, the question of "how can we give everyone access to information (on the Internet)", requires new thoughts:

  • Should we revisit access, and provide local information spots ("InfoSpots") to provide schools and communities with access?
  • Should we apply the model of the road for the access to the Internet? We need someone building the roads, but once the roads are built, pedestrians and cyclists can use the road for free. - Who are our digital pedestrians and digital cyclists? Read our FAQ on DigI:Internet_Lite_for_All

The course on configuring InfoSpots has the following aspects

Solution and examples

  • Overview over components of the InfoSpot containing antenna, local network control centre (LNCC), and local school-/community-server.
  • Examples of implementations at Selela, focus on more than 20 km to the closest mobile tower, Izazito reach "behind the rim of a mountain", and [Esilalei_(TZ)]] for a solar panel powered installation

Configuration

  1. using Winbox.exe (by Mikrotik) to connect to Antenna and/or LNCC
  2. reset the default configuration
  3. copy the configuration files to the antenna/LNCC
  4. control the installations
  • Every LNCC has specific installation files per region to allow for specific whitelists, e.g. schools in Tanzania (TZS) have free access to learning sites, as well as see a specific login page with direct links to learning sites.
  • Configuration files are generated on Nextcloud.BasicInternet.org and will be opened for Regional Competence Centres and those configuring.

Backend & Information system

  • Voucher creation for e.g. 1 h, 4 h, 24 h to streaming- and bandwidth-intensive services
  • The local School-/Community-Server is build using a Raspberry Pi (RPI), where communities can create local content (in their own language).
  • The knowledge base with information packages on health, ICT, communications are collected at Yeboo.BasicInternet.org being a Nextcloud installation
