The vision of IoTSec - Security in IoT for Smart Grids is to promote the development of a safe and secure Internet-of-Things (IoT)-enabled smart power grid infrastructure. The University of Oslo (UiO) is presented in IoTSec through the Institute for Informatics (Ifi) and the University Graduate Centre (UNIK). UiO is the largest university in Norway, with 27.000 students. For UiO (UNIK, Ifi, Simula) the IoT project will consolidate Information Security as a key topic at the Institute of Informatics (Ifi). Both UNIK and Ifi have through their strategic groups for Information Security identified key recommendations, which are implemented a.o. through the strategic research initiative ConSeRNS. Through ConSeRNS, members of 4 research groups collaborate to focus on information security and robustness.

The University Graduate Centre (UNIK) is a non-profit educational and research foundation owned by the University of Oslo (UiO), Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) and the three major research institutes: the Norwegian Defense Research Establishment (FFI), Institute for Energy Technology (IFE) and Telenor R&D. UNIK is a graduate educational institution for master and doctoral students, primarily from UiO and NTNU. The main focus of UNIK is on applied science.

The Norwegian Computing Centre (NR) is a private, independent, non-profit foundation established in 1952. The Simula Research Laboratory (SRL) is a non-profit research institute publicly funded by the Norwegian Government. SRL offers an environment that emphasizes and promotes basic research, but is also involved in education, and innovation. The Department of Networks focuses on research into robust and secure infrastructure, services and future distributed applications. SRL has 2 ongoing projects in the area of Smart Grid: PRONET and TIDENET.

NCE Smart

The Norwegian Centre of Expertise Smart Energy Markets (NCE Smart) is a cluster and a competence center that develops smart and sustainable energy solutions through innovation and business development. The company Smart Innovation Østfold AS is the facilitator of the cluster. The cluster represents internationally oriented businesses with a total revenue of €2,5 billion. NCE Smart is a pioneer in energy market design and implementation, and has a long track record in SmartGrid and Smart Energy Markets research. The cluster is responsible for innovation projects totalling more than €30m. Three of the projects in the cluster were EU commissioned. The cluster leads the H2020 EMPOWER project and is involved in the FP7 Smart Rural Grid, as well as the RCN projects FlexNett and ChargeFlex. NCE Smart currently has 3 SmartGrid related PhD candidates. Security has been identified as a key-component for the growth of smart energy solutions.

Glitre Energi Nett (GEN) is a significant utility provider in Norway and has a clear focus on new services for the distribution grid following the roll out of smart meters. The electrical grid parts in EB, Lier Nett and Hadeland Energi joint forces in 2016 and changed name to Glitre Energi Nett. The Grid parts of Glitre Energi er amongst the 10 biggest grid providers in Norway and provider electrical power to 90.000 customers. The unit has the ambition to become the best competence centre for grid provision, supply security and technology knowledge in the field.

Movation

Movation is an independent resource center for open innovation in the Nordic. Movation helps start-ups and established companies to expand, extend and excel in their innovation activities. Movation was founded in 2006 by Telenor, Opera and others, and was in 2009 transferred into an SME. Through Movation the partners created an arena where experts with different professional backgrounds and expertise exploited their knowledge in new ways to foster innovation.

In the IoTSec inititative Movation will use their knowledge in collaborative research to foster a successful initiative with real-world impact. Movation will also disseminate the IoTSec results towards targeted partners.

Fredrikstad kommune

Secure-NOK

Secure-NOK is a Norwegian security company that focuses on cyber security for control systems and critical infrastructure. The company has an international focus and has offices at Hamar and in Houston, Texas. Secure-NOK has developed a technology for detection of security attacks in control systems and critical infrastructure called SNOK® Cybersecurity Monitoring System. Their technology is based on behavioral anomaly detection and is specially designed for control systems. In practice, this means that their technology does not need access to the Internet to detect new viruses and cyber attacks, it uses very little resources and can run on old / legacy machines, programmable logical management (PLS) and other equipment used in control systems, and that it requires only one-way communication, i.e., only communication out of the control system.

In the IoTSec initiative Secure-NOK collaborates on attack detection technologies for Smart Grids.

Mnemonic

mnemonic AS is one of the largest providers of IT information security services within the Nordic Region. mnemonic supplies products and services to some of the leading private and public sector enterprises. 130 specialist staff operate in the offices in Oslo, Sandnes and Stockholm on ICT and sensor security.

In the IoTSec initiative mnemonic will work on security mechanisms for Smart Grids.

Cyber Physical Systems Lab

The Cyber Physical Systems Lab (CPS lab) focuses on a number of Enabling Technologies and their Applications having the physical organization divided into several Spaces pursuing the following goals:

(A) Provide a hands-on opportunity to several IFI courses taught at BSc and MSc levels, and MSc projects, inside the topics covered by this Lab. The topics of CPS Lab are meant to complement existing Lab initiatives at IFI and elsewhere, as far as we are aware of them (e.g., the Smart Grid lab of NTNU).

(B) Provide an open space for various MSc Topics offered at IFI by the applicants and others that want to use the Lab.

(C) Provide a platform for Industry to interact directly with IFI students by providing concrete problems through the Lab (e.g., as devices that need some form of investigation).

The University of Roma La Sapienza (UNIROMA1) , founded in 1303 by Pope Boniface VIII, is one of the oldest universities in the world and a high performer among the largest universities in international rankings. Sapienza offers a vast array of courses including degree programmes, PhD courses, one to two year professional courses and Specialization Schools in many disciplines, run by 63 Departments and 11 Faculties. Since 2011, the University inaugurated the School for Advanced Studies and evaluates candidates on the basis of educational merit, that provides students with courses and activities aimed at encouraging and developing their capabilities through scientific, cultural and interdisciplinary enrichment. Some 8,000 foreign students are regularly enrolled at Sapienza. In addition to this, Sapienza encourages international exchange: there are over 1,100 incoming and outgoing exchange students per year, thanks to several mobility programmes.

Together with the University of Roma La Sapienza we will prepare a course on for Measurable Security for the Internet of Things, and will exchange academic staff.

Ecole Polytechnique

The Laboratory of Informatics of the École Polytechnique is a mixed research unit consisting of two tutelles: the École polytechnique and the National Center for Scientific Research (CNRS). LIX falls under the jurisdiction of the INS2I division (which stands for the National Institute of Sciences of Information and their Interactions) of CNRS. Research at LIX is organized in "research teams", each team combining researchers, teachers, PhD students, post doctoral fellows, etc. around a common scientific goal.

In IoTSec we colaborate closely with the COSYNUS team, who works on the semantics and static analysis of software systems, including distributed systems, hybrid systems, and cyber-physical systems.

Gdansk University of Technology

The Gdansk University of Technology (GUT) s the oldest university in northern Poland where more than 20000 students are studying at 9 faculties. The Faculty of Electronics, Telecommunications and Informatics (ETI) is one of the biggest faculties of GUT. The faculty has received the highest (A+) category in the ranking maintained by Polish Ministry of Scientific Research.

GUT is participating in IoTSec through the Information Assurance Group (IAG), a research group in the Department of Software Engineering of ETI. IAG focuses on risk and trust management in relation to different qualities (of software, systems and development projects), like safety, security and privacy. Of particular interest are methods and tools for developing, maintaining, assessing and communicating evidence based arguments. A concrete result of this research is NOR-STA - a tool supporting assurance (in the form of assurance cases) and compliance (in the form of conformance cases).

The Centre for Integrated Emergency Management (CIEM) of University of Agder is a multidisciplinary research centre. CIEM conducts research on networks, mobile devices, human-centered sensing, social media, sensemaking, visualization, decision support, collective intelligence and technology adaption in order to release the potential of the powerful evolving technology for integrated preparedness and management of emergencies. The centre was established in 2011.

In the IoTSec initiative we interact with CIEM on Ethical Hacking and security for energy sector through their SEMIAH project.

COINS Research School

The Research School of Computer and Information Security (COINS) integrates Norwegian research groups in Information Security to a larger entity by integrating the course portfolio for research school members, builds stronger relationships between doctoral students in the network, establishes more incentives to excel and increases student mobility through access to a larger network. COINS also increases Norway’s international student mobility, hosts internationally recognised researchers, and offers “free flow of goods and services” in Information Security Research in Norway.

COINS will co-ordinate the education of students and promote IoT Security through IoTSec.

EU-projects

H2020 Project Empower

EMPOWER is a 3‐year Horizon2020 research and innovation project with a budget of 50 MNOK, and started in January 2015. The project includes partners from Spain (Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya), Switzerland (University of St. Gallen), Germany, Malta and Norway (NCE Smart ‐ Schneider Electric, Fredrikstad Energi Nett and eSmart Systems),

The objective of the project is to develop an entirely new energy market in Europe where consumers can buy and sell locally produced energy from solar panels, micro wind turbines and other decentralized energy production sources. The result will be the offloading of central and regional electricity grids, increased local electricity production and cheap renewable electricity to consumers. In the EMPOWER project, a new market design will be developed and tested in three demonstration areas in Norway, Germany and Malta.

ECSEL project DEWI

The DEWI (dependable embedded wireless infrastructure) project wants to foster Europe’s leading position in embedded wireless systems and smart (mobile) environments for both personal and professional users. A “sensor & communication bubble” using wireless technology enables less expensive and more flexible maintenance and re-configuration. Individuals will gain easier, safer and more comfortable, transparent access to information provided by the “bubble”.
