DigiYouth: Digital Literacy Portal for Digital Empowerment of Youth

Note: this site is a placeholder for proposal submitted to Fit-for-the-Future by the Botnar Foundation The main objective of this proposal DigIYouth is to initiate the digital transformation for youth in Dar es Salaam by addressing connectivity, access to information and digital skills to all youth. In order to achieve this main objective, we established the following sub-objectives as a driver:

  • Prepare the regional Knowledge Portal for Digital Skills and Digital Health Information;
  • Implement the knowledge portal in 23 community centres, reaching more than 1,000 youths in phase I, and 5,000 youths in phase II in Dar es Salaam;
  • Assess the level of digital skills among youth, following the study methodology of pre-assessment, intervention and post assessment;
  • Apply Digital Skills training programmes for youth including out-of-school youth; and secondary school and university students.
  • Establish the base for scaling to a National Knowledge Portal.

The underlying concept is to provide Digital Inclusion through the Freemium Model for access. One of the fundamental challenges in the Internet is the access model in developing economies. As Internet access is provided dominantly through the mobile network, there is no focus on non-profitable content such as information on health, education and innovation. This proposal suggests a regional Knowledge Portal for Dar es Salaam, encompassing digital information on health, education and innovation. Furthermore, the proposal ensures availability and affordability of the access through the Freemium model for access.
