Problem description: Norway has specific challenges when it comes to video communication. Though the land-based infrastructure is sufficient to places where people live, communication to re-creational and remote sites is challenging. The mobile network is heavily used for video today, and the usage is expected to increase. A second scenario is based on the operational challenges for environmental monitoring in Norway as a whole, and specifically in the Northern areas. The ocean area belonging to Norway is roughly 7-times as large as the land area, and a large amount of this area is located in the far North. The only way to establish communication therer is through satellite links. Satellite links from geostationary satellites suffer from the low elevation, leading to signal outage (scintillation). Thus providing video communicating in the North is a challenge.

This thesis will provide a survey over challenges being identified in scientific literature in this area of video communication. The main goal of the survey is to identify best practices, and areas for improvement of the video communication. Based on the survey, a specific callenge is identified, and a test-bad will be implemented to achieve hands-on experience. The latter part of the thesis will then identify methods to enhance/optimize the solution.

Methods and Tools: The tools and methods in this thesis are based on
  • A set of scenario, describing the challenges
  • A list of requirements being extracted from the scenarios
  • A description and evaluation of technologies and tools being candidates for solutions
  • A functional architecture/description of the envisaged system
  • An implementation of the core concepts
  • A demonstration of the solution
  • An evaluation of the solution, including a critical review of the descisions taken earlier
  • Conclusions

Time schedule T0 0 starting month, T0+m denotes the month where the contribution to a certain chapter shall be finalized
  • T0+1 months: create an initial page describing the scenario on video over satellite
  • T0+2: Provide a review of scientific articles describing the various challenges for video over varying and thin pipes
  • T0+3: Focus on one/two scientific paper(s) for implementation
  • T0+4: Establish the table of content (TOC) of the envisaged thesis. Each section shall contain 3-10 keywords describing the content of that section
  • T0+7: Provide a draft of section 2 (scenario) and 3 (technologies)
  • T0+9: Establish a first implementation
  • T0+10: testing, adapation and evaluation
  • T0+11: Suggest a solution extending the methods/parameters suggested in the literature. Evaluate your solution based on a set of parameters, keep in mind there is no such thing as a free lunch
  • T0+12: Deliver the thesis
Pre-Knowledge The thesis will focus on an implementation of quality mechanisms for video streaming, thus the applicant should have a a pre-knowledge on video codecs. As thin pipes are typically seen in wireless/mobile environments, the author should also have some knowledge in the field of "radio".

Depiction

this page was created by Special:FormEdit/Thesis, and can be edited by Special:FormEdit/Thesis/Video over thin and varying pipes

Motivation

  • video over satellite
  • Nordområdet
  • geostationary satellites: scintillation in the atmosphere
  • Norge: 7 times as much sea surface as land surface

Problemstillingen

  • which possibilities are there to provide video over satellite?
  • how do the parameter fit relate to pre-knowledge of the satellite link?
  • "real-time" calculation and optimisation

Survey

Start with a survey

  • Video over Satcom (kommersielle løsninger i militære samarbeid)
  • Buffer size, parameter setting, codecs
  • varying and thin pipe
  • 15-20 scientific paper to start with (Google scholar or Microsoft Academics), se Search_for_literature
