DESSI +DESSI is a new infrastructure for modelling, emulation, monitoring and controlling of the electrical grid. DESSI covers simulations, emulations and cybersecurity of power systems, ranging from micro-, macro- to regional energy systems. To counteract the climate crisis and stay below 1.5 deg C temperature increase requires a massive transitive from energy to electrical systems. DESSI will develop the physical system and computational methods necessary to ensure the reliable and efficient operation of power systems with large-scale renewable generation, flexible loads, storage devices, power flow control and security of cyber-physical systems. DESSI will include physical components such as * PV panels, small wind turbine, hydrogen technology components and batteries, for decentralized installations, peer-to-peer and autonomous operations * Inverters, power switches, IoT, for monitoring and control of micro-grids and power systems. * Scada architecture with PLC and other nodes, to simulate and emulate small industrial systems, including cybersecurity vulnerability analysis * Cyber-physical system simulator for simulation and cyber vulnerability analysis * Power Grid emulator to get hands-on experience on system effects Besides the physical & virtual infrastructure, DESSI will also connect 80-100 houses and report the energy consumption. The high-resolutions energy data are collected per fuse and every 10 s to create a research data-base as a basis for the energy transition in households.  +
Decentralised Energy Systems for Africa in times of Climate Change +The thesis will elaborate on decentralised energy system in an African context. Out of the various challenges, these ones will be addressed: * Suitability of systems * Environmental conditions * Societal implications The baseline of the thesis is formed through an in-depth literature review, as well as interviews with experts in Africa. We envisage practical measurements, e.g. the degradation of performance on both solar cells and (NaIon) batteries  +

ENDRISK +Endrisk proposal to Horizon 2020, not successful Our mission in this project “Equitable, Novel, Digitally supported Research Interventions for Sustainable Knowledge – shared as Understandable, Unbiased and Utilized information to manage poverty related infectious diseases in Sub-Saharan Africa” - ENDRISK - is to contribute research findings and practice development strategies to tackling PRDs and reduce disease burden via evidence informed services that contributes to regional and global health security that can end health disparities globally. Our effort will contribute to equity, equality and broad collective engagement that drive transformation to resilient and inclusive health services for all. ENDRISK has three main objectives; (1) Community Impact of digital support to community health workers and community vigilance to reduce PRD, (2) Community-based studies and clinical trial on prevention, treatment and diagnosis of PRD, with TB and associated factors as model case, and (3) Improved Research Capacity for all partners.  +

Efficient SOAP messaging for Android +This thesis expands the third-party SOAP library ksoap2-android with the possibilities of using different transport protocols other than HTTP/TCP and using compression to reduce the size of SOAP messages. The additional transport protocols are UDP and AMPQ, and the compression tools added are gzip and EXIficient, an XML-specific tool that implements the Efficient XML Interchange format. The expanded ksoap2-android library was used in a Web service client application installed on an unrooted Samsung Galaxy tablet using the 4.2.2 version of the Android operating system. The Web service client was tested against different Web services with different transport and compression combinations, using a proxy server to adapt the messages to a COTS server. The testing was done over both mobile broadband and Wi-Fi to examine the effects the different combinations had on CPU load and battery usage of the Android device, and the network load. The testing showed that while EXIficient compressed slightly better than gzip, it caused a much greater CPU load and battery usage that gzip, causing the expenses to absorb the profits. Both UDP and the AMPQ implementation RabbitMQ performed better than HTTP, especially when focusing on achieving a higher goodput. This thesis concluded that using gzip together with RabbitMQ is the better option when it comes to reducing network overhead while simultaneously maximizing battery lifetime of reliable SOAP communication on an Android device.  +
Efficient data collection using Android ADK in a high velocity mobile environment +Is the Android ADK suited for data collection in a high velocity environment? The thesis will test the limitations of the individual components that a prototype will consist of using the Android ADK.  +
Elaborating and implementing http2 standards for server-side compression +The need for basic information delivery over capacity-limited networks requires new standards for a "low-capacity Internet", delivering basic information for free to everyone. The Internet links several billion devices worldwide together, and consists of a multitude of networks with local or global scope, private or public connected to a broad array of networking technologies. Today, around 46% of the world’s households have access to Internet through either fixed or mobile subscriptions. However, the gap between developed and developing countries is still wide. According to ITU [2], by the end of 2015, 34% of households in developing countries had Internet access, compared with more than 80% in developed countries. In the least developed countries, only 7% of households have Internet access. In this same set of countries, 12 of 100 inhabitants have active mobile broadband subscriptions, whereas less than 1 of 100 inhabitants have fixed broadband subscriptions. Thus, a large number of inhabitants don't have access to information, not even basic information. The goal of this Master Thesis is to elaborate the use of novel web standards for server side compression. The idea is to send compressed texted and pictures to the mobile phone. Opera Mini is currently the only browser following this principle, by reducing Web pages to text and pictures, and compress the page before sending the compressed page to the mobile phone. The thesis needs to elaborate e.g. http2 for server-side compression of content or other functionalities to deliver LC-Internet.  +

End-to-end QoS +Evaluate the performance of QoS-mechanisms based on active probing in a tactical MANET using IPSEC.  +
End-to-end QoS in a mobile ad-hoc network including satellite links +This thesis deals with the end-to-end resource control in a network consisting of a mobile ad-hoc network (MANET), which ich connected with a backbone containing a satellite link. The scenario is bases on an IPSEc gateway being close to the user, where it is difficult to communicate resource information in real-time to the applications. In order to establish the resource situation, the measurement of end-to-end traffic and their resource usage have to be conducted. The quality of the results can be improved by adding extra traffic in form of test packages through the network. The thesis contains * a representation of the state of the art in this area * the evaluation of the existing solutions for this type of tactical networks * the testing of one or more potential solutions in a testbed  +

Energy Consumption Database for the Digital Transformation (2/7) +Future Homes have the opportunity to be adaptive to the quality of the electricity grid. By monitoring the energy consumption on fuse-level every 10 seconds, one can generate energy profiles of private homes. Current regulations suggest a reading of power values 1/hour, or in maximum every 15 min. Given a high-frequency reading of power consumption (1/10s, 1/min) might give an opportunity to introduce new services. Given the size of the work, several theses can be performed on the topic: # Establish the low-power monitoring infrastructure in the home (Raspberry Pi/Arduino and ModBus to read from Power Taggs) # Create the public source database for energy consumption, combining high-resolution energy data with 3rd party information such as weather data # Establish the AI infrastructure for analysis of the electricity data # Monitoring the home energy distribution - Feature extraction through AI # Potential of contributions from private homes to energy stability # Wireless control systems for home appliances to support the energy transition # Security and privacy assessment of wireless in-house control systems for energy appliances The assessment will be based on high-frequency consumption data from actual smart meters and power taggs by fuse level, as well as modelling of services.  +
