The Basic Internet Foundation

The Basic Internet Foundation is a Norwegian foundation with the following purposes:

  • The Foundation will offer free access to low capacity Internet as a carrier of digital content to people in areas with low admission and / or no internet coverage.
  • The Foundation will assist organisations and companies to adapt and disseminate information for the affected recipients should be able to help themselves. Assistance may include educational systems, healthcare, agriculture information, innovation, banking or other services that contribute to increased welfare and value creation that benefit the population in the respective areas.
  • The Foundation will offer their benefits based on greatest need and in many areas as possible.
  • The Foundation is not bound to own/operate and deliver their benefits in perpetuity in an area. When factors such as social conditions, market, or economy have changed sufficiently, the Foundation can terminate its involvement in the region. Foundation can then sell/transfer assets, rights and obligations to commercial operators.

The Foundation was established in December 2014 as collaboration between The University Graduate Centre (UNIK) and Kjeller Innovasjon AS. The team consists of Professor Josef Noll, Tor J. Blomseth, Gunnar Nilsson and Vidar Sannerhaugen. Together we have extensive experience with entrepreneurship, development, implementation and operation.

Misjon

Our mission is to promote "Internet light to all", being free access to information for everyone on Earth.

Motivasjon

  • Muligheter for å drive innovasjon & entreprenørskap

How to achieve

The Basic Internet Foundation and Internet.org

Internet.org is a global partnership between technology leaders, non-profits, local communities and experts who are working together to bring the Internet to the two thirds of the world’s population that don't have it. Sharing tools, resources and best practices, Internet.org partners will explore solutions in three major opportunity areas: affordability, efficiency and business models.

Affordability
No one should have to choose between access to the Internet and food or medicine.
Internet.org partners will join forces to develop technology that decreases the cost of delivering data to people worldwide, and helps expand Internet access in under-served communities.
Efficiency
Transmitting data—even a text message or a simple web page—requires bandwidth, something that’s scarce in many parts of the world.
Partners will invest in tools and software to improve data compression capabilities and make data networks and services run more efficiently.
Business models
Connecting billions of people will be a massive global effort that requires ongoing innovation.
Developers, mobile operators and device manufacturers will work together to introduce business models that give people more ways to go online.

"Envision the world where everyone can open his browser and get free access to Internet" The Basic Internet Foundation aims at providing infrastructure for free and efficient access to the basic information of the Internet, being text and pictures.

Affordability
Our ultimate goal is that every person should have a free access to Basic Information (text and pictures) on the Internet. Our calculations show that 0.5 US$/month is enough to provide a human the Basic Internet access.
Efficiency
The basic need to get access to text and pictures is as little as 4-20 MByte/month, according to traffic measurements from Opera Software. Such access answers the need for information for education, health and innovation. Such a basic access will also stimulate entrepreneurship.
Business models
Our approach of user involvement results in a user/community driven network building. The Basic Internet Foundation will stimulate local groups to ask for their own access network, while the Foundation will provide the backbone access.

We believe that access to the Internet will contribute to

Education
Education means access to public knowledge through libraries such as Wikipedia, to background information, to basic and higher education. Nextelco has established partnership with the Center for Wireless Innovation Norway (CWIN.no) for higher education in wireless networks, and seeks cooperation with partners providing help in education on all levels.
CWI Norway has a close collaboration with Nordic Universities in Denmark (Aalborg University), Finland (Lappeenranta University) and Sweden (Karlstad University), and through the partners reaches a worldwide network of educational institutes.
Health
Health information is available in the Internet to at large account. By providing doctors and patients access to the Internet we will contribute to less mortality.
Innovation
Innovation is best fostered when people with different background discuss. Our approach of user involvement brings people together, and creates links between emerging economies and the Scandinavian countries.
