Objective All was good in the voice era when things All was good in the voice era when things were almost linear both for the growth in traffic and the revenue. It is the data era with an exponential increase in the traffic volume that has caused the operators to rethink their strategy as the return of investment is still linear. Over provisioning which has been the name of the game for quite some time does not seem to be the viable solution in the near future. This is why the operators have started to think towards elastic networks in which the resources can be scaled up and down as per the requirement. Network function virtualization (NFV) in conjunction with software defined networking (SDN) has been tipped as an enabler for such elastic networks. The aim of NFV is to virtualize the network functions while the focus of SDN is to separate the control plane from the data plane. NFV alone promises huge reduction in costs (both CAPEX and OPEX) as the virtualized network functions can be run on the commercial of the shelf equipment while SDN is an enabler for dynamic provisioning of virtualized network functions which is a key to faster service delivery. However the effective and efficient use of NFV/SDN presents a number of challenges. In this talk, Kashif Mahmood from Telenor research will look into the opportunities which NFV/SDN present and the challenges to the adoption of this new technology.es to the adoption of this new technology.  +
