Topics discussed
- Internet Lite
- National Knowledge Portal
- Community Platform develop
- Women Entrepreneurship
Internet Lite
- The Internet Lite concept, introduced by the Basic Internet Foundation, ensures network neutrality (nett-neutrality), as every content is equally treated. The division between free and premium is based on content types.
- This is whereby we do not just focus on filtering content but rather filtering by the content type. Using lightweight formats (text, pictures and AMP) reduces the bandwidth substantially.
- The information shared in AMP format is equally good and reliable because it just takes in the existing information and filtering the video content to remain with texts and pictures, see http://BasicInternet.org/Mission/?amp as an example
- Data by Opera Software show that 10 minutes of video is equal to 10 month of information (using lightweight representations). Thus, we suggest regulatory framework, where 3% of the bandwidth in the network is reserved for free access to information
More on AMPand lightweight solutions
- The AMP format is a lightweight format, and was introduced by Google to ease the search. AMP is an add-on to Wordpress, which allows the majority of Web pages to deliver lightweight (AMP) versions.
- An alternative solution for lightweight (server-side or network-side compression) are the proxies by Google Chrome and Opera Mini, that reduce dynamic Web pages to static and reduced file-size versions.
- The AMP format is an example of the implementation of the Freemium model for access: free for lightweight Web, and premium for those in need of video access. Our implementation of the premium version is through vouchers.
National Knowledge Portal
The National Knowledge Portal came up in discussion with ITU on how to foster digital inclusion and the digital transformation. ITU, together with CISCO and HP, has established Digital Transformation Centres (DTCs). See: https://its-wiki.no/wiki/BasicInternet:DTC_workshop_for_development_at_ITU
We believe that a National Knowledge Portal has the potential to re-empower governments. Members of four Universities (UiO, OsloMet, UiA and NTNU) are working on a positioning document to influence political decision makers, see: https://docs.google.com/document/d/18aln9OlCN-HvjlgaDXWfZeQvKogR_XbTNrNprfNwqBc/edit?usp=sharing
Note: the National Knowledge Platform is implemented in Rwanda, once funding is ensured. All inhabitants get their own account and the offer to acquire a Digital Skills Certificate.
Community Platform development
Together with Joseph Bishi, Barrack Otieno and others we work on the specifications for a local community platform, linked to the Knowledge Portal https://docs.google.com/document/d/1Xcbx2iHGaleRRjQ-Y6nDu3Dr254gQtZNS507Qh1kH2A/edit?usp=sharing
Please inolve everyone who might be interested, e.g. Prof. Bitange Ndemo
We need to come up with a development strategy
- The community platform development will focus on on community-based content and it should be framed as an alternative approach rather than an replacement of existing platforms
- The community platform should ensure an open-source implementation ensure that it addresses the gaps in the existing platforms so that it is water tight
- We need to address the regulatory issues that can work when creating the platform
- The focus on the community platform development is creating one which individuals within the community can freely create their own content and not only consume the content that is existing
- Ideally, the platform should be community-owned so that it is tailored towards the need its local people
- Inputs like https://www.internetofgoodthings.org/ should be addressed, though can be answered just adding the link to the repository
Women Entrepreneurship
Women Entrepreneurship is one of our projects, working with the innovation community in Norway. The goal is to link investors with the women in the community networks in need for support, and to do that through the platform
- if you'd like to have a look, please login at induct.net and search for women entrepreneurship, then we can involve you in the ongoing work.
- Short presentation of our ideas, presented at African Innovation Week Nov2019: Media:Women_Entrepreneurship-AIW_30.10.2019c.pdf
- Josephine works with promoting trade among grass-root women in Uganda-Shea Butter, South Africa-Leather, Kenya- pottery and weaving, tea, coffee, leather, which can be implemented in the platform.
Takeaways
- Josephine will check with her Community Network colleagues and acquaintances who are interested int he National Knowledge Platform concept with e.g. Uganda-Bosco and her contacts in Malawi
- Josephine will will check on the gaps in their present platforms and give updates
- With regards to promoting trade among the grass-root women and promoting visibility she will check with her network in Kenya, South Africa and Uganda their interest in our women entrepreneurship platform
- Josephine will inform her contacts in the different countries
- Josef will apply for open-source from UNICEF Foundation, once we have a clear concept in mind
