Purpose and Follow-up
The introductory meeting was established to learn about each other, and look for opportunities for collaboration. We identified common grounds, addressing:
- Extend the Global School network for the global network of learners, GLOBAL CULTURE EDUCATION INITIATIVE (GCEI)
- Connect schools across the globe (Kenya, Peru, Ecuador,...)
We formulated the vision of connecting another 1000 schools within the next years, and specifically introduce 100 schools from 20 countries in the next 5 years to become part of the GCEI.
Experiences by BasicInternet on School Connectivity
The challenges we have faced in School Connectivity is that the business model for school connectivity is not in place (see Reports). Though SDG target 4.1 addresses the number of schools connected to the Internet, the cost model for achieving this goal is not defined. Some countries have a specific budget, but that often does not cover the costs of unlimited mobile internet access. Furthermore, in rural areas, the quality of the mobile network is not sufficient to provide a decent quality of service for broadband content, such as videos. Thus, BasicInternet focusses on
- Access in areas with bad coverage or no mobile broadband, where we establish Information Spots. We reach out to more 20 km, see DigI:Selela.
- Information Spots for the free access to information on health and education, and hopefully the National Knowledge Portal once it is established in each country.
