Summary and Action Items
As a follow-up from the Non-discriminating access for Digital Inclusion (DigI) project, we introduced the connectivity of 10 schools as a proof-of-concept for a sustainable solution for school connectivity in rural areas. Vodacom is interested to join, and suggested a glide path to ease the adoption of mobile networks in schools. The pilot was discussed with UCSAF during a Seminar on School connectivity in Feb2020.
To main aspects to be addressed through the pilot:
- Sustainability using a mobile broadband package of e.g. 10 GB/month, and free access to information on site
- Wholesale model to mitigate costs, e.g. by having one contract serving 10 schools (and 10 SIM cards)
Further steps:
- Catherine to provide the practical info on the envisaged project - timeframe for installation is Juli-Sep2020
- Josef to create an impact document, based on a) the digital health impact by DigI, b) scalability, and c) strategic dimension, e.g. coupling to GSMA/ITU
- Most suitable implementation of a contract is an "add-on" to the existing school connectivity contract with UCSAF
Background Information
Through the DigI project we implemented information spots in villages, see DigI:Villages. Notably are the connectivity in Selela, connecting to the mobile tower being 22 km away, and to Izazi, located in the mobile shadow behind a mountain rim.
Through the Solution provided by BasicInternet, the mobile network is used to provide a local Wifi information spot. Through a local network control centre (LNCC), we avoid bandwidth demanding traffic. The goal of the Foundation is to provide Internet Lite for all through a Freemium model. The current implementation focusses on a health portal https://izazi.yeboo.com/health_info_dashboard.php , being the basis for scientific studies by Sokoine University (SUA) and University of Oslo (UiO).
