Our vision is to provide Internet lite for all. Based on the experiences from our operations, we suggest to establish at least one information spot per village, using the freemium model for Internet access. This freemium access will provide free access to information being text, pictures and local content, and premium access to bandwidth demanding services like video and games.
Using Internet lite information spots, people lacking the ability to pay for mobile broadband still have the opportunity to access information. Thus, they will be empowered to become part of the digital society.
Ongoing operations
Our first installations were performed back in 2011, bringing Internet to specific places in Africa. Bases on those experiences, the Internet lite for all information provision was provided:
- for patients in 4 hospitals in Norway as part of the GravidPluss project
- for 20 health stations in Norway as part of the Safe Pregnancy (Trygt Svangerskap) project
- for children and their coaches in the Caritas Kinderdorf in Bottrop, Germany. See press release on Cooperation for Education for All
- for people in rural areas in Tanzania as part of the "Non-discriminating access for Digital Inclusion" project
- through the Community involvement we have now activities in more than 8 countries (Feb2020), see our Villages/Schools/Health facilities connected with Internet Lite
How Internet lite access works
In order to establish a low-cost infrastructure, we have implemented a distributed architecture, consisting of
- the local access network with Wifi hot-spots. We focus on access to information in places where people meet, rather than focus on coverage.
- the local core, consisting of (i) a local network control centre (LNCC) for the free- and premium content, and (ii) the village server for bandwidth-demanding local applications, e.g. video information
- the global core, providing the (i) centralised network control centre (NCC), as well as (ii) a web portal for ordering of vouchers, and exchange the voucher informations with the local core.
- the village server providing free access to local information, the free access to information through the LNCC, as well as the voucher-based access to premium information on the Internet.

History
Our activities started in back in 2010, when Guy Kamanda asked for help in developing Internet Access in Africa. We created the introduction Our_Dream_Internet_for_everyone and with the help of Vidar Sannerhaugen and Vetle Engesbak from Kjeller Innovasjon we started activities through Nextelco.
We established a series of pilots in 2011, and connected a.o. the Universite de Lisala, and had a workshop with the University in April 2012.
Based on the experiences in DRC, we developed the vision of Internet lite for all. In 2014 we started the Basic Internet Foundation from Kjeller Innovation and UNIK, following the Internet tradition we had at Kjeller, and created the infrastructure for free access to basic information. We have joined forces with the Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation (NORAD) for the Vision 2030.
