Collaboration in the "Non-discriminating Access for Digital Inclusion" (DigI) project with

Main focus on

• Connectivity to remote villages, establishing InfoSpots with Health Information
• Uptake of Health Information through video information
• Sustainability of operations

Connectivity to remote villages

• Reaching out to remote villages, establishing InfoSpots with Health Information
• While mobile 3G mobile network reaches 7-9 km, our solution reaches out to more than 20 km, as demonstrated in Selela at the Serengeti
• Providing Internet Lite, the free access to information and premium access to broadband content

Uptake of Health Information

• InfoSpots with health information, presented as video information
• Portal http://Yeboo.com in each village, with specific information on health videos https://izazi.yeboo.com/health_info_dashboard.php

• Collaboration with http://GlobalHealthMedia.org on health videos
• Digital Health focus by UiO through the Centre for Global Health

• Tremendeous success, with 60% knowledge increase for Cysticercosis, and a knowledge level of 91% on Tbc and 94% on HIV/Aids (see presentation at Breakfast seminar with Nikolai Astrup on free access to Digital Public Goods)

Sustainability of operations

See: Lessons learned and recommendation from DigI project, especially the collaboration with communities in establishing InfoSpots in villages. We have the request to connect another 80 villages now, based on the success of the DigI project. See DigI:Villages for an overview over our collaborations.


School Connectivity in TZ

Based on the success of DigI, we have set-up a project to connect 10 schools as a proof of concept

National Knowledge Portal

Through the Digital Inclusion (DigI) project we have seen a tremendeous knowledge uptake through digital local information spots providing Digital Health, see http://Yeboo.com (community information spot - focus on health)

Thus, BasicInternet 2.0 focusses on the National Knowledge Portal, incorporating all four aspects needed for empowerment in the digital society:

1. Access - building Information Spots in villages/communities with free access to information
2. Skills - establishing a National Knowledge Portal with information on health, education, agriculture, financial inclusion and more
3. Regulations - having free access to the National Knowledge Portal as part of the licence conditions is straightforward
4. Inclusion - providing the free access to information is a first step, having tailored information for minorities and people with disabilities is a common demand.

Special focus is on sustainability, and a solution that addresses OPEX costs as little as 15-20 USD/month for the connectivity. Please read more in our paper on Impact of school connectivity, the business model for "minimum connectivity" - the SchoolConnectivity project in TZ is going to collect data used for the envisaged 3 models on sustainable connectivity
