Brief Report of the Meeting

A meeting organized between African Child projects with other stakeholders managed to deep dive into School Connectivity (“School Connect”). The project aims at connecting a minimum of 10 public secondary schools and establishing sustainable models for school connectivity in Tanzania with the goal of mapping and connecting all 4885 schools around Tanzania at the end of the project. The pilot is a contribution to the worldwide effort for school connectivity, and will answer the demands in resource constrained environments. The event took place on the 5th august 2020 at MUHAS.

Participants including Shule Direct: an organization that provides software for online and offline learning subjects and extracurricular skills for secondary school, represented by Faraja Kota Nyalandu. Sandra Oswald and Leonard Laibu represented leading cellular network companies (Vodacom Foundation and Tanzania Telecommunication Company Limited (TTCL) respectively, UCSAF was represented by Ritha Kimolo while Internet Society Tanzania Chapter was represented by Nazar Nicholas and Peter Mmbando and TzCNA was represented by Matogoro Jhabera and Pascal.

The meeting started by all participants to introducing themselves, their main activities and how they are going to participate in the school connectivity pilot program. Then followed by a Power Point presentation from Catherine Kimambo (Director - African Child Projects). The presentation focused on the goal and objectives of the pilot program as well as key performance indicators (KPI) and model of the project.

Stakeholders were convinced with the pilot project due to the current situation where we are looking for innovation in education in order to have effective development on education. Different opinions and questions were raised by the participants such as:

1. What are the expected results and what will be the indicators used to measure success in this pilot.
2. Sustainability of the pilot bearing in mind there might be hidden costs that might arise such as electricity bills since desktops consume a lot of power, maintenance and teachers overtime.
3. Inclusive objectives that will focus on achieving what the Ministry of Education wants that being equal access to digital education in schools. Teachers also want a high level of performance among students and easy access to teaching materials, and lastly parents and students want good performance and results.
4. Connectivity and contents will save the purpose of the project.
5. We should be able to define what result we want to see in the students at the end of the day. Do we want them to acquire digital skills or do we want them to just consume contents. This will be defined by the device used (desktop or tablets).
